Henry is a partner at Smith & Downey, a law firm with a national practice concentrating in employee benefits, employee compensation, and labor and employment law. Smith & Downey has offices in Baltimore, New York, Washington, DC, and Charlotte, NC.
Henry advises for-profit, tax-exempt, governmental and church-related employers of all sizes, in all industries, in all areas of the country concerning the full range of employee benefit and executive compensation issues. He also regularly works with other benefits professionals and other attorneys who require legal expertise for their clients in Henry’s practice area.
He received his undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Frostburg State College, where he was an Honors graduate in Political Science and Education. Henry received a Master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and his law degree from University of Maryland School of Law, where he graduated with Honors and was selected to the Order of the Coif. Henry is a member of the Maryland and District of Columbia Bars.
When not practicing law or spending time with his wife and five adult children and six grandchildren, Henry chairs the Surrattsville High School Foundation and plays guitar in The Back Pages Band. Henry has been extremely generous with his time and talents with the ISCEBS group for the past 20+ years. We wish him happiness in his upcoming retirement and thank him for always freely sharing knowledge and expertise about benefits over the years.

Adam Meehan is a Partner at Smith & Downey, P.A. where he deals with all aspects of employee benefits and executive compensation law. He has extensive experience in advising clients on the tax and ERISA implications of a broad range of benefits-related matters, including qualified and nonqualified deferred compensation and retirement plans of all types, welfare and flexible benefits programs and executive and broad-based equity-oriented and performance-oriented incentive arrangements. He also regularly advises clients on fiduciary and governance issues in all aspects of employee benefits plans.
Prior to joining S&D, Adam was an Assistant General Counsel/Vice President at a Fortune 25 bank where he represented the bank’s global human resources group in areas pertaining to benefits and compensation with a principal focus on tax qualification and fiduciary aspects of retirement plans and the tax aspects of executive compensation arrangements. He previously was an attorney for an international AmLaw 100 law firm where his practice focused on a wide variety of employee benefit and executive compensation matters.
Adam received his LL.M. in Taxation and Certificate in Employee Benefits Law from Georgetown University Law Center, his J.D. from the University of Oklahoma College of Law, and his B.A from Salisbury University. Adam is an adjunct professor at the University of Baltimore Graduate Tax Program where he lectures on health and welfare benefit plans and deferred compensation plans, a frequent lecturer on all aspects of employee benefits, and is currently drafting a textbook on executive compensation.
